With the new school year starting soon, many parents will be concerned about school readiness and looking for ways to help their children prepare for big school. While there are many preschool worksheets available, some are more useful than others in terms of versatility. There is a lot more to school readiness that just knowing the alphabet and counting to ten.
Now, as a former teacher I am not saying that one should never use math worksheets; however, I do believe that many teachers are using a very superficial method of instruction that relies too much on low-level math worksheets and hands-off instructional approaches. Worksheet lessons move from reading the directions aloud, to doing sample problems as a group, to completing the worksheet independently (or at home with parents), day in and day out.
I highly recommend that you copy and paste these outlines into a word processing application, such as Microsoft Word, Word Processor or Notepad. Adjust each outline in print preview to have each outline on it’s own separate page to create your worksheets and finally, print them.
A much better option is for the mistake to never get practiced. Skill and drill worksheets can only avoid this trouble if someone is standing over the student with rapt attention on every answer to be written. As soon as a mistake is made, the reason for the mistake must be identified, and the correct method needs to be practiced right then and there several times. And then again in about 10 minutes, and then checked again before class is over.
Picking the end goal is like when you go on a vacation road trip to sunny Orlando, Florida. When you pull out of your driveway and you know your goal is to end up in Orlando, Florida. In your car you have maps and a GPS to help you arrive at your goal.
Tip – Use Worksheets Sparingly Since free multiplication worksheets are so easy to find, it’s tempting to give your child too many. You mean well, but it just seems like a good idea to have them do several at a time. Little brains can only take so much. Keep learning fun by sprinkling worksheets into their curriculum as a fun break from their usual textbook.
