Both lower-level-thinking worksheets and too many (even high quality) worksheets can hold students back by not providing stimulus and challenge. Studies have shown for years (just do a Google search!) that children learn best through active involvement and real-life experiences. Virtually every teacher knows that children learn to read by being exposed to books and by being read to, NOT by completing worksheets. The same applies to all areas of learning.
Rather than using worksheets, a better method is to use individual size white boards and have the child writing entire facts many times. Having a child writing 9 x 7 = 7 x 9 = 63 while saying ”nine times seven is the same as seven times nine and is equal to sixty-three” is many times more successful than a worksheet with 9 x 7 = ___ and the student just thinks the answer once and then writes that answer on the duplicate problems.
Like a Road Map A goal setting worksheet is like the road map. The map gives you an overview of the route to take, but it does not show all the obstacles such as traffic accidents and road repair on your journey.
The best way to develop mathematical skills and confidence in the subject is to clear the basic fundamentals of the subject. This can be easily done with the help of detailed subject worksheets.
Printable worksheets can be done with your child when it is convenient for you. Between the ages of 3 and 5 they will need your help, as they cannot read instructions, but once you’ve explained what they need to do on each worksheet, you can leave them to it. A worksheet should not take more than 15 to 20 minutes to complete – you can certainly squeeze that in once or twice a week.
Save Money It’s easy to see how free worksheets can save you money. If you want, you can skip buying math books and just use worksheets that you get for free on the internet. All you need to do is use a ”scope and sequence” book that tells you what your child needs to be doing in math by age and grade. This book is essential when you homeschool.
