Now, consider a worksheet with 6 x 8 = ____ written ten times, but in a column. The child only has to consider the entire fact of 6 x 8 = 48 once. Then the child just writes 48 in the other slots without repeating the entire fact or even thinking the entire fact. There is a huge difference between recognizing the fact 6 x 8 = 48 and have to actively think about, write, and say 6 x 8 = 48 many times. This difference is equivalent to the difference between a multiple choice question and an essay question. The copy machine brought worksheets and worksheets greatly reduced the number of times a fact was repeated. Repetition is extremely important to learning a skill. In addition to the repetition issue is the fact that the more of your five senses you use in learning, the quicker you will learn and the longer the learning will last. Writing out the entire fact as you say it, uses vision, hearing and touch. And if you use a whiteboard rather than paper, your child will be happier about writing out the facts.
Quality may be a little more expensive, but good worksheets will motivate your child to produce neat work that they can be proud of.
I have had many high school Algebra students enter class thinking they know the correct order of operations, but we quickly learn that something is wrong. Digging a little deeper, we discover that they learned the order of operations incorrectly, although they will swear they are doing what they were taught. In reality, they have spent the previous couple of years practicing incorrectly. Their answers got marked wrong but no one took the time to find out why. And the damaged was never repaired.
I have had success in creating my own worksheets but you do not have to create your own unless you choose to do so. There are so many sites which offer free printables and there are also worksheet makers available. The way they work is that you input some data and their software creates a specific worksheet and answer key, if applicable. You approve the suggested form and print it for your children.
Why should you use spelling worksheets when you probably already have spelling workbooks? Aren’t there a lot of activities students can do without worksheets, such as writing sentences and copying definitions? Won’t those activities simplify the job for teachers and parents?
Printable worksheets can be done with your child when it is convenient for you. Between the ages of 3 and 5 they will need your help, as they cannot read instructions, but once you’ve explained what they need to do on each worksheet, you can leave them to it. A worksheet should not take more than 15 to 20 minutes to complete – you can certainly squeeze that in once or twice a week.
